Solution-Focused Brief Therapy

Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT) places focus on a person's present and future circumstances and goals rather than past experiences. In this goal-oriented therapy, the symptoms or issues bringing a person to therapy are typically not targeted. Instead, a qualified therapist encourages those in treatment to develop a vision of the future and offers support as they determine the skills, resources, and abilities needed to achieve that vision successfully.

All therapy is a form of specialized conversations. With SFBT, the conversation is directed toward developing and achieving the client’s vision of solutions.  The following techniques and questions help clarify those solutions and the means of achieving them.

I have learned that most people have previously solved many, many problems and probably have some ideas of how to solve the current problem. To help clients see these potential solutions I may ask questions that uncover your ideal outcomes and what it would look like. This approach is not for everyone as most treatment will be completed in a handful of session; sometimes even after one, single session.
